About
I am completely obsessed with colour, the brighter the better and everything I create is
inspired by this. My worst fear when designing is that my work could just blend into the
background. I also have a love of the unexpected, trying to constantly reinvent the
preconceptions of how a fabric can be used and how it could be something completely
original. It makes me feel as though everything I design is an experiment that could be a
complete disaster, which is exciting, and I think makes my pieces feel very fun and
eclectic. I am very proud to be a young British designer, having such a strong history of
fashion and textiles especially in the north and it’s so important to me to keep that
tradition alive and support the local textile industry that is still fully operating on home
soil today.
Project overview
Home Comforts
Inspired by the eccentricities of my family and home, I wanted to create a contemporary full-blown colourful collection that juxtaposes the idea of refined heritage and exuberant modernism. To create semi-abstract imagery, I manipulated my own personal family photographs into saturated ‘pop-art’ designs, drawing inspiration from the artists Gilbert and George. In contrast I added another angle from my research and blended my patterns with traditional deadstock Harris Tweed and accents of neon brights, redefining the usual conventional uses of these fabrics. A conversation with my mum about a lack of stylish, colourful and high-quality fashion for women over 50 inspired my target audience, I wanted to create a maximalist collection for women who want vibrant, exciting and sophisticated fashion who have a desire to be seen and heard.
