About

I'm Adam Jones from Manchester, and I've just finished my Architectural Technology (Design and Construction Management) Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Lancashire. I got interested in architecture when I was young, watching my grandad design and build his own farmhouse. Then, undertaking work experience at a small firm in Cheshire made me want to learn more about how buildings are constructed and how people interact with them.

I'm especially interested in sustainable design and how new technology, like AI, is changing the way we plan and build developments. At work, my main focus is on digital modelling, detailing and delivering education buildings across the country, from primary schools to colleges. This has given me a lot of hands-on experience in the construction industry.

Now that my degree is finished, my goal is to get chartered with the CIAT and eventually work on a leisure centre project. I want to help create spaces that really work for the people who use them, and to be part of making architecture more sustainable and forward-thinking.

Project overview

Beyond the Server Room

This evidence-based project transforms a brownfield car park in Preston’s University Quarter into a visionary Health and Wellness Hub powered by waste energy from a data centre. By integrating the data centre, the scheme operates as a “mini power station,” delivering both critical digital infrastructure and a sustainable energy solution. The student’s design captures and repurposes the significant heat generated by data-processing equipment—waste heat that would otherwise be lost—to provide efficient underfloor and pool-water heating, setting a new standard for sustainable architectural solutions.

The project further showcases technical and design innovation through advanced heat-recovery systems that distribute excess thermal energy to adjacent campus buildings. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and lowers carbon emissions, supporting Net Zero ambitions. The student’s approach exemplifies excellence in architectural technology, addressing complex site challenges and enhancing the cityscape. A creative, research-driven process—incorporating detailed sketches, physical models, construction prototyping, and digital simulation—demonstrates the student’s commitment to accessibility, safety, and resilience. Multi-scale digital and physical modelling highlight the forward-thinking and technically rigorous nature of the work.

This performance-driven development enriches the community and sets a benchmark for urban regeneration through technical excellence and visionary design.
