About
I am primarily a landscape and portrait painter, producing 2D works using mediums such as oil paints, inks and charcoal. However I am currently exploring 3D installation artwork using fabrics and modified gallery furniture. My work aims to provide a momentary escape from daily life through the exploration of fantasy and mediaeval themes.
Project overview
Rising
My work explores mountains from a fantasy viewpoint to produce a visual and tactile experience. I have mindfully chosen colourful sheets of fabric based on their physical and visual properties and draped them upon gallery furniture which has been modified using expanding foam.
I have found fabric to be a versatile medium for installation work as it can be manipulated to simulate both harsh and soft shapes, which is ideal for imitating mountains. I frequently engage with fiction and non-fiction literature in order to inform the development of my art practice.
This project, 'Rising', has particularly been influenced by the fantasy novel "A Court of Mist and Fury" by Sarah J Maas and travel literature "Mountains of the mind" by Robert Macfarlane. In addition to reading travel literature I also took some trips to local fells in order to produce photographs and audio to further my research for this project.
I have designed this work to be viewed at 360° and encourage for viewers to walk around to feel the different textures and see the colour shifts of the fabrics that I purposefully chose for the work.
