About
As a surface pattern designer, my work is focused on reconnecting people with their inner child, through embracing and embedding optimism, creativity, and play. Inspiration and influences are from the vibrant world of children's wear design, where bold patterns and colours are worn with confidence and joy. My aim is to bring that same sense of playfulness into everyday life, creating designs, patterns and motifs that resonate and delight intergenerational audiences and consumers, encouraging people to embrace their unique identities, without fear of judgment. My work celebrates the colourful and creative aspects of everyday life by elevating ordinary objects into sources of joy. It is about creating moments of happiness, inviting everyone to rediscover their playful, inner child and carefree spirit. My designs are a reminder that playfulness, creativity, and joy are worth remembering and embracing every single day.
Project overview
Joy and Playfulness in Pattern Design
The main focus of my project is about bringing joy and creating a diary-based collection of work. I aim to create a pattern narrative using my drawings and ideas from a stream of consciousness. This project draws on my undergraduate work which focused on children’s pattern design and I realised that I wanted to wear some of those designs I had seen throughout my research and making. Brands such as A Fabula and Lucy & Yak, offer unapologetically loud and vibrant compositions that radiate confidence and delight. It’s for these reasons that I’ve always been drawn to children’s clothing and illustration and wished that I could wear the same prints on my own clothes. I remember having a ladybird umbrella when I was younger, but I feel like as an adult, it became much harder to find products with such colour and personality, and if you were to find them, you’d likely find judgemental eyes on you. It’s this associated stigma I hope to explore throughout this project whilst challenging these norms by bringing colour and joy to a marketable and accessible space for everyone, not just children.
