About
I’m Aya, an exchange student coming from Morocco. It’s my fourth year studying architecture, I choose this path mostly because I wanted to be in a more artistic course and for my love for drawing, I originally started getting interested in art thanks to my mom, she is a very accomplished artist that touched to many form of art from classic drawing to sculpture and wall drawing she was my biggest model in my artist journey, but my love for buildings came later when I had the chance to travel and see Italie and majestic monuments or Portugal. It was the castles that mesmerised me and led me to architecture.
Project overview
The 87 lord street
The project I will present here is the result of the three years studying architecture, where I got interested in the importance of preservation of existing architecture, using what is already there and how we can appropriate it, make it modern without losing beauty or essence, which is why when I saw the building in 87 Lord Street abandoned, I chose it as my project. My first idea was to make clear what was new and what was old, and to make it the first- and second-floor slabs were intentionally set back so that they no longer touch the existing perimeter walls. This approach allowed me to keep the original structure intact and visible which gave an impression of floating plates with varying levels, generating dynamic spatial relationships and double-height spaces, this decision was mostly took because of the condition of the existing building that is the result of the fusion of two different structure with both different hight, so to give a more harmonious building I choose to add a glass band to give a modern look to the building while adjusting the height problem, I made the decision to add the fire escape stairs outside covered with a bight red case so the building can stand out and catches the eye.
