About
Hey, I'm Fern!
I am an innovative and conceptual Textile Design graduate particularly focusing on impactful surface design.
My specialism lies within the development of ideas and pushing the boundaries of creative norms- this is evidenced in my most recent project Re-Invent the NHS in which I have creatively enriched hospital environments aimed at improving patient recovery.
Alongside this, I have strengths within creative illustration, digital pattern design expertise and a deep awareness of market trends to create versatile patterns suited for a wide range of commercial outcomes. Throughout I experiment with scale, line and colour to optimise my design choices to create outcomes adaptable for avenues such as fashion, fabrics, interiors, stationary, gift wrap etc. This is demonstrated in winning both Cosatto and Peter Reed Live Briefs in which I adapted my skills and handwriting to customer and market types, responding to a brief.
Furthermore, I have a wide variety of skills ranging from traditional and digital design, stitch and tactile processes as well as translating hand drawing and painting into considered pattern and digital designs.
Project overview
Re-Invent the NHS
This project Re-Invent the NHS, was inspired by my grandmother’s time in hospital, where I felt a responsibility as a creative to positively influence the clinical environments surrounding patient care. It explores how hospital spaces affect recovery alongside medical treatment, recognising the wider impact of environment on wellbeing.
My proposal introduces redesigned staff uniforms, projected murals that change throughout the day, and a mobile that reflects colour and shape across the room. Together, these carefully considered interventions transform healthcare settings into welcoming, supportive spaces for patients, visitors, and staff, demonstrating how creative design can enrich healing environments without interrupting traditional clinical practice.
The photographs displayed are illustrative in nature and do not necessarily reflect best practice, clinical guidance, or real-world clinical procedures. They are included solely to demonstrate artistic and design elements and should not be interpreted as clinical instruction.
