About
Geraldine is an artist/printmaker living in the Lake District and Chamonix France. Her love of the mountains and rock formations inspires her to look at detail within the environment, which has led to her physically embedding natural elements in her work. Within the printmaking disciplines, she specializes in etching and mono print, often combining several techniques. Recent work for her Masters degree has given her the opportunity to create large -scale screen prints and experiment with glacial flour, the grit from the glacier, on aluminium plates. Geraldine has a degree in Fashion and Textiles and worked in the fashion industry for several years, before completing a teaching degree. She taught art and design for twenty years, encouraging students to expand their artistic knowledge by working with artists, designers and business. She exhibits in the UK and has contributed to several exhibitions, group and solo, in the Chamonix valley.
Project overview
Sublime Chaos
My project is a response to the receding glacier and the fragile lateral moraines of La Mer de Glace, in the Chamonix valley, France. Alongside natural geological erosion of wind and water, the effect of human created pollution has caused temperatures to rise, glaciers to retract, permafrost to melt and mountains to crumble. The landscape is disappearing before our eyes. A series of screen -prints that started as ink and snow drawings overlooking the Mer de Glace, have become a metaphor for the slippage of the rocks on the lateral moraine. They were created in the same spot that Mary Shelley stood to view the glacier in 1815, and inspired her to include a description of it in her gothic novel ‘Frankenstein’ I wanted to collaborate with the landscape, to capture the memory of the glacier. The highly textured panel of glacial flour prints is made from the natural erosion of the mountains. The grit from the glacier was adhered to aluminium plates. The jagged surface of my ‘carborundum’ ensures that my prints are imprecise, not quite defined, the mountain leaving its own mark as a statement of defiance.
