About
I am a textile designer, with a particular enjoyment in surface pattern design. Throughout my university experience, I have continuously challenged myself to experiment with a wide range of techniques, materials and creative approaches in order to develop my skills and broaden my design practice. I love incorporating political and artistic movements into my work, giving each design a deeper sense of meaning, while also making it highly personal and expressive. During my studies, I have created collections across a variety of categories, including childrenswear and interiors, allowing me to expand my knowledge and adapt my design style to different audiences and purposes.
Project overview
Etched in Venomous Glamour
Etched in Venomous Glamour is inspired by the influential punk movement of the 1970s. The word etched symbolises tattoos and permanence, while venomous glamour represents the fusion of darkness and deadliness, with romance and femininity. The punk movement emerged as a youth-led form of protest in which boundaries were constantly pushed. Rooted in rebellion and individuality, punk encouraged self-expression through shock, with protagonists such as Vivienne Westwood, ‘punk’s prototype and greatest showpiece’ (Krell, 1997).
Punks became recognisable through flamboyant garments, unconventional hairstyles, and heavily embellished clothing and accessories designed to challenge social norms. Therefore, my interiors collection explores the themes of identity, rebellion and self-expression, values that were central to the punk culture. I aimed to juxtapose ordinary, functional interior products, with harsh embellishments and dramatic detailing, transforming them into expressive statement pieces. Rather than existing purely as practical home furnishings, these products are intended to function as works of art, rather than complete useable home furnishings.
I photographed the collection at my family farm to create a stronger connection to my background, and make the work feel more authentic. The working farm setting also emphasised the industrial elements of the collection, such as the metal embellishments, while the placement of the furnishings throughout the woods and fields created a foreboding, eerie atmosphere. The contrast between my punk-inspired interiors and the agricultural environment further reflects the rebellious, unconventional themes explored throughout the project.
