About

My name is Hope Lally and I am an abstract textural artist. In my practice I work with mixed media materials allowing my work to develop through accumulation and duration. Gradually, my work has evolved through experimentation and ongoing exploration within material physicality. My artistic journey has been shaped by my love of the arts and my experiences working with like-minded people. This helped me develop both my ideas and approach to making work. Currently, I am focused on establishing myself in the art world and continuing to progress my practice.

Project overview

Two Hundred and Ninety Six

Two Hundred and Ninety Six is composed through accumulated layers of paint and texture, creating surfaces that function simultaneously as image and as a record of time. In each layer there are records of existence rather than a story, they hide visual histories which naturally occur within my process, giving my pieces a worn layered effect. However, they have an unintentional expression that only emerges though the action of applying, distressing or removal of material. The layering of paint causes the piece to become fragile, resulting in flaking or chipping from minor actions such as applying other material to the surface. This removes a certain amount of control I have over the outcome allowing for the materials physicality to emerge. As a result, connections between the works are made temporarily through the ongoing process of time and action.
