About

I am Justin Bascome-Dickinson, a final year student of a BSc (Hons) Architecture degree. Studying to become an architect is something that has been a key part of my personal and creative development and a career I have aspired to for over half of my life. My design approach is led by sustainable design and user experience. As a Bermudian, these are key considerations that address challenges in my homeland now and for the foreseeable future. Throughout my time studying, I have developed my skills in AutoCAD, Revit, and modelmaking while refining my presentation skills and design approach. My interest is open to all sectors within the field, but I have a particular passion for residential and specialised public architecture. My work is heavily inspired by minimalist architecture, particularly architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Peter Zumthor. Their approach led with simplicity and clarity, prioritising user experience. This is something that continues to influence my own design philosophy. In the short term, I intend to continue my pursuit of becoming a fully qualified architect (MArch Part II studies) while further refining my design philosophy. In the future, I hope to contribute to projects that promote sustainable design built upon principles that lead to positive, meaningful, and well-resolved environments.

Project overview

Second Tide Studio

My design theory for the three projects this year is summarised by this one phrase: Creating a Connection. Project three, Second Tide Studio, located on the southern side of the Fleetwood Market, is situated on a plot of land that once held historic buildings in Fleetwood, including the Queen’s Hall Theatre. After seeing and experiencing the town, this project gives the visitor the opportunity to take a piece of Fleetwood with them by creating personalised artefacts inspired by the materiality of the heritage of Fleetwood’s seafaring culture. The building reflects the ideas of artefact by primarily using timber, glass, and metal as the material foundation of the building. The buildings include an array of spaces, including a creator space, residential space, and café, to accommodate users of work and leisure while encouraging community interaction. As with all my projects, the design is guided by sustainable principles and user experience while reinforcing the main goal, creating a Connection.
