About

My art practice focuses on the individual as I look to find a connection with my subject and capture not only their beauty but their personality and character. Each one of us are unique, complex individuals and through my paintings I aim to showcase my subject off.

I have been inspired not only by the interesting individuals I have met since moving to Preston in 2020, to start a Foundation Art and Design course and through the Fine Art BA course, but through the people I have met growing up in Cumbria. I have found inspiration as well as motivation through artists such as Lucian Freud, Sofiya Kuzmina, Elly Smallwood, Jane French, Jenny Saville, The Guerrilla Girls and Gustav Klimt.

Project overview

What was she made for?

My art practice focuses on the individual as I look to find a connection with my subjects and capture not only their beauty but their personality and character in my paintings. ‘What was she made for?’ is a series of three portraits that was heavily inspired by the 2023 ‘Barbie’ Movie, but particularly two scenes.

The first in which Barbie sees an older woman – a sight she’d never encountered in Barbieland – and tells her she’s beautiful, the second being a conversation between Barbie and her creator, Ruth, who says the line ‘We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back and see how far they have come’.

These scenes opened my mind to the idea of beauty and aging in womanhood and I aimed to express these values in my work and show that although there is a double standard for aging with women, they are still and have always been beautiful.
