About

My specialist area lies within children's surface pattern design, where imagination and character designs play a central role. I am particularly drawn to cute, child-centred design styles and feel most confident creating quirky, playful, character-led prints.

Project overview

Bedtime Beasts

"Bedtime Beasts" is an imaginative children's surface pattern project featuring cosy, friendly monsters across a playful reading nook and matching pyjama collection, designed to make bedtime feel magical, comforting, and fun. My inspiration for this project came from an interest in how children perceive monsters through their own vivid imaginations. Rather than viewing monsters as frightening, many children imagine them as playful, friendly or humorous.

To develop my designs, I gathered primary research from Reception, Year 3, and Year 5 classes within a primary school, allowing me to observe how different age groups interpreted the idea of a monster. It was particularly interesting to see the contrast in children's perceptions. Younger children often created colourful, soft, and expressive creatures, while older children introduced more personality, and have clearly been influenced by media.

This research highlighted the creativity and originality of children's thinking, inspiring me to create designs that capture a sense of fun, comfort, and imagination within the reading nook and pyjama collection.
