About
I am a BA Textiles student with a strong interest in East Asian art and design, particularly in how traditional motifs, symbolism, and storytelling are expressed through visual culture. I am also drawn to textiles and the tactile qualities of materials, especially how texture, pattern, and craftsmanship can be used to communicate meaning. Through my practice, I enjoy exploring how these influences can be combined with contemporary ideas to create work that is both visually engaging and conceptually driven. I am keen to develop this further in my postgraduate studies, where I hope to deepen my understanding of East Asian visual traditions and expand my skills within textile-based and mixed media design.
Project overview
小猴子 Little Monkey
My project explores the theme of triumph through a series of symbolic monkey motifs, colours, and carefully constructed compositions. I wanted to create a piece that visually tells the story of overcoming hardship, beginning with feelings of anger, chaos, and instability before progressing towards unity, growth, and renewal. Through the changing poses, overlapping forms, and evolving colour palettes, the monkeys represent emotional struggle, support, resilience, and eventual recovery. The repeated motifs allowed me to show how experiences and relationships develop over time, while the leather-carved medium added texture and depth to the storytelling. Overall, the piece communicates the idea that triumph is not achieved alone, but through endurance, connection, and growth after adversity.
