About
Feminism has been the driving force behind my work since I was 15 years old. Over the past decade, this passion has only deepened, becoming more vital to me as I strive to make a meaningful impact. My early work was bold and outspoken, highlighting the injustices women face in Western society, such as the pink tax, gender inequality, and the pervasive issues of violence and abuse. However, as time has passed, I find myself increasingly weary—exhausted by the persistence of these societal challenges. This exhaustion is reflected in my current project, which embodies the ongoing struggles women continue to face. Despite the intensity of my feminist work, I also find solace and inspiration in nature. Growing up in the scenic landscapes of Devon and Cornwall, and later studying illustration at Falmouth University, I developed a deep connection to the natural world, particularly flowers and the sea. These elements, along with the colours they inspire, serve as a powerful source of inspiration in my art. Whether expressing the femininity and sadness found in my feminist pieces or capturing the vibrancy of the natural world, colour plays a crucial role in conveying the emotions and narratives within my work. Through my art, I hope to contribute to making the world a better place—either by advocating for change through my feminist messages or by creating beauty through nature-inspired designs.
Project overview
Depicting Femininity: The feminine experience explored and re-presented through floral motif.
My project aims to depict ‘the feminine struggle’ through re-presenting floral imagery which has historically so often been stereotypically associated with women. Exploring the emotions and experiences of women’s lives through nuanced photographic depictions of floral decay, my aim is to draw attention to the impact of patriarchal suppression on feminine experience. My project encompasses both the beauty and challenges of Western societal constructs of womanhood. By prompting reflection and awareness, it seeks to highlight the negative impacts of patriarchal suppression on women whilst simultaneously celebrating inherent social and cultural ideologies of femininity linked to flowers and floral motifs. This dual narrative reveals the multifaceted nature of femininity, illustrating both the resilience and the vulnerability of women's experiences. Using floral motifs my aim is to produce visually beautiful and powerful fine art photographic pieces which engage the audience in the difficulties of some women’s lives. The utilisation of floral motifs showing decay serves as a visual re-presentation interplay, expressing a fragmented version of women depleted by the expectations of a patriarchal society.
