About
I am a mixed media artist and painter from Preston, who has studied fine art over the past eight years throughout education and higher education. I use my creative practice as a tool in which to express my thoughts and emotions I have learnt a variety of techniques and skills along the way using all different forms of medium and media, however I always enjoy going back to the simplicity of the basics such as drawing and painting. Over the past four years in particular I have built my creative practice around the topic of race, BLM, protest and my own Afro-Caribbean heritage. Whilst producing work around these themes I have further developed my knowledge and understanding of Dominican life and culture as well as my own family history. I have learnt new terms such as critical race theory and Afrofuturism and contextualised my practice in a way I had never done before and hope to continue to develop both my practice and techniques in the future.
Project overview
Dominican Mythology
Dominican mythology is a series of six acrylic painting depicting a range of mythical monsters and creatures found within Dominican folklore. Each painting depicts a different monster that has its own features stories and tales. I have always taken an interest in mythology and enjoyed learning of tales of monsters, hero's, myths and legends as a form of knowledge and escapism, however I have never thought to research the myths of Dominica until I began researching further into my own heritage and the island of Dominica. I wanted my work to be vibrant and eerie to both capture and depict what I imagine these creatures to look like.
