Mnemonic Machine
Mnemonic Machine is part of a larger cyclical art practice that explores archives, memory and technology through video installation. The raw footage is extracted from sites like The Internet Archive and YouTube. It then goes through secondary digital manipulations, such as, looping, distortion and layering, before it is displayed in this exhibition. The finished file is then uploaded back onto the Internet Archive and the search for more raw footage restarts. My methodology is deliberately chance based. On the Internet Archive, keywords, metadata and tags generate unexpected relationships between archival materials. The resulting work often presents multiple narratives that coexist in an unstable network. I am interested in the tensions that exist between the vastness of digital memory stored on the internet and the speed at which it is being created and subsequently lost. By isolating fragments from their original contexts and running them through my creative process, I can create a space where these images can be experienced in new ways. The aim of my degree show exhibition is to use projection, televisual displays and layered sound to expand this network of associations beyond the confines of a single screen. The use of multiple display technologies allows many archival images to collide simultaneously, preventing the viewer from experiencing the material as a linear narrative. Each intervention contributes towards this endeavour, treating memory work not as a fixed act but as something that is constantly being carried out through acts of association, mediation and encounter.
